Daily Devotional: Speaking as a Christian?

How do you feel when someone says something rude to you? How do you feel when you hear someone speak harshly about a loved one? How do you speak to others? God is listening besides the people that hear you speak! Is your speaking blessed by God or would you be ashamed of how you speak if God was listening?

Ephesians 4:29 (NRSV)

29 Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear.

Proverbs 12:18 (NRSV)

18 Rash words are like sword thrusts,
but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

We must all learn that what we speak can be hurtful or helpful. Words can hurt! But do we really think of this when we are speaking? For an experiment, go to a local mall and sit and listen to what people in the food court are saying. I believe that you would hear a lot of swear words and gossiping! You would hear the negative speaking a lot more than positive speaking! We must re-educate ourselves to speak as if we were speaking to Christ, himself! Would your words show to the world that “light” of being a Christian? God is listening always! Your words should be graceful and kind! Show God (and yourself) that your words are not harmful but uplifting to those around you!
